Interior Ideas

Feeling overwhelmed at the idea of decorating your home? Read on for some handy tips…

Holistic Stylistic

When you first broach the subject of sprucing up your home the temptation is to go room to room. There is nothing wrong with this approach, in fact it is a sensible way of approaching such a comprehensive task. Consider this though; a home always looks better when it displays a discernible style throughout. So when choosing wallpaper or paint, think of the house as a whole, and apply your desired style to every room. This does not mean you should bulk buy Anaglypta and be done with it; rather think about your favourite colour palettes, or what patterns and textures speak to you. By all means take it one room at a time, but keep an eye on the bigger picture.

Every Minute Counts

Quite simply, don’t rush; and plan your time effectively. Think about when you’ll be spending time on the job, and what you can realistically achieve. Otherwise you’ll inevitably end up rushing through it, which could leave you with a shoddy finished article. It is useful to work on a room a day, and focus on totally completing one room before you move onto the next one. There’s nothing worse than a series of unfinished rooms, so make sure you can sign one off before you begin another. If you’re using a decorator, relay all of this to them, but consider that they will be capable of working at a much higher pace than yourself, so best to give them a little creative freedom!

Fortune Favours the Bold

Be creative! When deciding on colours and patterns, don’t be afraid to express yourself. As pleasant as plain beiges and creams can be, there is a lot to be said for those homes that are bursting with colour and life. If you’re opting for three plain walls, make your feature wall count with vibrant images and funky textures. The fact that geometric patterns are in fashion gives you an opportunity to play around with these ideas and push the boundaries when forming your home design. And don’t be afraid to get stuck in with the decorating! Most tasks are relatively simple, and you’ll experience a real feeling of satisfaction when you’ve completed the job first hand. Visit our blog about hanging wallpaper for some on-hand advice. And maybe start off with spare room…

The Devil is in the Details…

Before you declare a particular room as ‘done and dusted’, take a look around. Look at the skirting boards; are they freshly painted? How about the ceiling, or the dado rail (google it)? If you’re taking the time to redesign your living space, surely you can spare a little more time to make sure that from top to bottom, left to right and everything in between, it’s absolutely perfect. Be demanding with your decorator; they are well paid and highly skilled professionals, so you should expect the highest-quality possible. If you’re not happy, speak up; remember this is your castle!
